Sometimes I had to interrupt the work in the clinic for going to the computer in order to do some specific calculations. This is particularly annoying if you have any tool you may need at hand but you feel overwhelmed when you have to do mental calculations. Sometimes the calculations are so complex that you don´t have another option that using the computer or you forget the functions to calculate some important variables.

It has been a while since I wrote a new blog entry at test-eye.com because we have been working hard researching with the apps. In that time, I have had the opportunity to introduce the first results in two conventions, the 5th Measurement Science Conference and the OPTOM2014 meeting at Madrid (Spain). I am happy to announce that the results are promising but I cannot at this stage anticipate the conclusions of the task force because we are writing some research papers about them.

Since test-eye.com appeared I have been working with the same idea: “The importance of standardization”. Although we are in the 21st century, the standardization is not present in all optometrist and ophthalmologist offices. One of the main reasons is the high cost of vision tests, so I decided to create some professional low-cost vision tests for iPad and Android Tablets. My first reference was the Amblyopia Treatment Study (ATS) from the Pediatric Eye Disease Group (PEDIG), they design protocols in order to collect data from different offices and clinicians. In order to be certified as a PEDIG clinical site, two specialists in Visual Acuity measurements are required (masked and unmasked). In another way, some equipment is needed depending on the protocol.

Optometric Research is not at its best right now at Spain. The government has done some important cuts in this area that block the possibility of young researchers to start or continue with their own careers as a scientist.  It was just a few years ago when Optometrists achieved the possibility to get their PhD in Optometry so it is strongly inconsistent that new talents are forced to leave their work.

The ClinicCSF is an APP for evaluating the Contrast Sensitivity Function with Sinusoidal Gratings. In other way, it is the cheapest test to measure this Visual Skill which only could be measured with expensive professional tests as VCTS or CSV-1000E. Obviously, it has their limitations although offers great advantages: automatized control, chromatic stimulus control, etc. One of his limitations is the 8-bits graphical card from IPad. If we balance prize and qualities I am sure that ClinicCSF is the best Test to measure Contrast Sensitivity.

In a colorimeter, the light is measured directly perpendicular to the sample through a series of three (RGB) or more colored filters which represent the relative amounts of red, green, and blue light reflected from the sample (Spyder4Elite has 7 filters).  More specifically these filters are designed to ideally simulate the three functions, x,y,z for the Standard Observer so that the instrument directly measures the three Tristimulus values X,Y,Z for the specific illuminant being used.

 Introduction.

The broadest functional categorisation of stereotests separates random-dot stereogram (RDS) tests from contour stereogram tests. RDSs were first introduced byJulesz in 1960 and present the observer with no monocularly visible contours. The absence of contours means that no form perception can occur until the horizontal retinal disparities have been correlated across a substantial area. This process is called global stereopsis.
